Welcome to Queensland Tongue Tie Clinic

What is a tongue tie?

Tongue-tie (ankyloglossia) is a condition that restricts the tongue’s range of motion. With tongue-tie, an unusually short, thick or tight band of tissue (lingual frenulum) tethers the bottom of the tongue’s tip to the floor of the mouth, and can interfere with breast-feeding.

What is a lip tie?

The piece of tissue inside the upper lip that attaches to the gums is called a maxillary labial frenulum, or lip frenulum. If that tissue is too short, it can limit movement in the lip.

Symptoms of tongue and lip ties include difficulty sticking out the tongue past the lower front teeth or lifting it to the upper teeth.

Infant Tongue Tie, does it hurt your baby?

The procedure doesn’t appear to hurt babies. This is because there are very few nerve endings in the area around the floor of the mouth.

Some babies sleep through the procedure, while others cry for a few seconds.

The baby’s head is held securely while sharp, sterile scissors are used to snip the tongue-tie.

What happens if left untreated?

Dental problems like tooth decay, swollen and irritated gums, and a gap between the lower two front teeth.

Gagging or choking on foods as your child starts to eat solids.

A hard time with basic things, like licking an ice-cream and kissing.

Trouble saying d, l, n, r, s, t, th, and z sounds. Rolling an r can be especially hard.
